One of 50 University of Maryland "Fear the Turtle" painted fiberglass terrapins that were on public art exhibition on campus for Maryland's 150th Anniversary Celebration. While most were on-campus, some appeared in Baltimore and other venues around the state of MD, plus D.C., for six months. They were auctioned off for scholarship money. Artists hailed from Mid-Atlantic region and had a $1,000 budget. Some sculptures, such as Kertle, remain on campus in various locations--not necessarily their original spots. His work is in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He was an abstract sculptor associated with the direct carving movement. These works, Night and Day, inspired by neolithic implements, once stood on the campus mall, in front of H. J. Patterson Hall, but no longer! Where have they gone? Artist's CV reports that in 1972: "Night and Day moved from Vermont by University of Maryland, and installed on campus at College Park. Placed on ten-year loan to university, and the loan is later extended." Still around in 2019.
